A simple way to explain this is shown below:

Henry went to Jane around 10 a.m to buy $100 as he had always liked the idea of having some of the hard currencies in his wallet

He got a unit of Dollar from Jane at 6.4 CNY

While listening to Breakfast News the following day, Henry heard a unit of Dollar is now worth 6.8 CNY in the exchange market. He goes to Jane towards afternoon the same day and sold his $100 at the rate of 6.8 CNY per US Dollar

Henry just traded Forex above; see the analysis below:

Dollar rate when Henry  bought the Currency = 6.4 CNY

Amount used by Henry to secure $100 => 100 x 6.4 = 640 CNY 

Dollar rate when Henry sold the Currency = 6.8 CNY

Amount Henry sold his $100 => 100 x 6.8 = 680 CNY

Henry's profit => 680 - 640 = 40 CNY

So by buying and selling back some Dollar notes, Henry was able to make an additional 40 Chinese Yuan as income
